NOKIA: THE INTERVANGELIST’S PLAYER OF THE WEEK

The Nokia Research Center isn’t a stranger to many a mobile developer. For over 20 years they have been endeavoring to ensure that their mobile solutions cater for real needs of real people. They are reaping huge benefits from this, being the leading mobile handset company in the world and one of the most recognized brands.

Like many other global players, Nokia realizes that Africa is not a market to ignore anymore. Not only as a consumer base, but also as a developer base with much untapped potential. With Ovi, their Mobile Communications, Cloud Storage & Digital Distribution suite released in May last year, Nokia is only going a step further in cementing their hold on the market.

But what really caught my eye is NoRA, Nokia Research Center‘s African arm. On their website they say that NoRA ‘focuses on understanding the needs of the African mobile phone user and creates concepts and visions to fulfill these needs’. They are working with NGOs such as the UN, Educational Institutions such as Strathmore University and most recently iHub. They know that these partners have a deeper understanding of local communities than most.

And have you heard of SlumCode? I can’t seem to find their website. They are an NGO aimed at understanding the dynamic of informal music in urban slum communities. NoRA has partnered with them to see what they can do for the millions of talented youth in African Slums. Check out this Video.

NoRA is also planning to roll out projects and research for solutions in anti-corruption, m-governance, citizen journalism and deforestation.

Verdict:

As a commercial enterprise, Nokia is of course looking at sustained profitability. CSR, and that’s exactly what this is, is all about looking good in the eyes of the consumer, and thus giving them yet another reason to continue being your customer. I am an ardent protagonist of social entrepreneurship and thus have no problem with Nokia utilizing its huge coffers to look like they care. In the end, the masses benefit, and once again the internet is serving the common good. A win win situation? I think so. Maybe the likes of Safaricom should borrow a leaf, but that’s a story for another day.
