YOUR WEBSITE’S MONEY MAKER: THE LANDING PAGE

In recent times, I have spent the better part of my professional time helping budding interpreneurs to transform their business ideas into profitable internet businesses. Some are already on the road and thus my role is to help them steer the boat in the right direction (at least in my professional opinion), and some are still ideas in their originator’s minds.

The one question I always ask my wonderful clients is this; which is the money maker on this website?

The money maker is what techies like to call the Landing page.

What makes your website valuable to advertisers?

I visit your website’s home page, and if your navigation structure is enticing enough, I might just move on into inside pages. These inside pages help me to better appreciate what it is you are offering me. Most website visitors will leave your website after the first or second inside page. If your website is that good, then they might go ahead to the third inside page.

Two major factors make your website valuable to advertisers; number of visitors, and the average amount of time each visitor spends on the website. Keep them there long enough and you might just be able to charge premium price for your advertising space.

But what if your revenue stream isn’t solely in advertising?

I’m talking about you the online shop, the paid subscriptions website, the online directory, the online advertising or information portal, or the online catalogue. If your users don’t register on the website, place an order or check out of the shopping cart, then you are simply ‘screwed’.

So how do you make your Landing page an effective Money maker? The experts at hubspot have some answers and I have sampled my favourite few.

  1. Pass the Blink Test
    Think of it this way. A wayward tycoon driving through the red light streets has many twilight girls to choose from in split seconds, before Paparazi shots find their mark on him. The smart twilight girl down the road knows she only has 2 seconds to capture the tycoon’s interest long enough for him to usher her into the Range rover.

    Be it the use of captivating graphics, ingenious copy, or interesting animations, you need to know your audience and what it will take for them to wait upon your registration form as it loads. Once they start filling that form, you are already past the 50% mark.

  2. Go Naked
    As I always tell my clients, simplicity pays. For your visitor to end up on your landing page, they must have clicked on a link that promised them one thing or the other once they get to the landing page. Give it to them, plain and simple. Don’t we all hate people who beat around the bush? Make your landing page deliberately sparse, devoid of any and all hyperlinked distraction. For once, keep all the adverts away!
  3. Endorsements Matter
    Lets face it, we all love credibility. Be it a client testimonial, a mark of quality or the logos of your reliable partners; keep it at eye level without the need for scrolling. If I trust you (a very ambiguous word in internet circles), I might just fill in that form or send you my M-PESA.
  4. Restate Value
    Please be nice enough to remind me again my why I am on that page. A simple, bulleted list near the top of the page to restate what you’re offering and why it’s valuable to me will go a long way in ensuring you don’t lose this lead at the last minute.
  5. The sell is not over till he/she is out of the store
    Have you ever gone into an Indian’s shop and right after check out, the short balding fellow on the other side of the counter goes ‘Bratha, wewe pan taka jaribu ile underwea ya wanaume pia? Mzuri sana mi naambia wewe, wacha nilete.’ Before you kindly decline, he shouts to Nzioki at the other end of the store!

These five basic principles should help you turn your landing page into an effective Money maker.

    Marketing is a sticky subject but if done correct will pay great in conversions! True a landing page is the key to making a sale!
