Monday Moments Ep 11 – The Best 7 of 2010!!

One of my favorite verses from the Christian Bible is one that says, “Be faithful in little things and you will be accorded Bigger things” or something along those lines. I believe in celebrating little success, no matter how small. If you have visited this blog more than 3 times, then this post is dedicated to you. I intend to go on the down low beginning today, as I prepare for what promises to be a great year for Intervangelist EA in 2011. Monday Moments Ep 6 – Girls Rule!!

As unnatural as that title might sound coming from a male, it has never felt more appropriate to scream from the top of my voice; Girls Rule!! From my encounters with the Nokia ladies at one end of the city, to watching the iHub ladies on the other end trouncing 17 other male dominated teams in the quest for Kshs 1 Million venture funding, I was humbled by how well our tech sisters are doing in this field.

The Tech field is so dominated by three legged creatures that for a long time it has been almost terrifying for any lady trying to venture into it. The hostile stares, the ridicule, the hate speech; I have seen (and sometimes even took part in) it. LET’S GET SOCIAL SAVVY!

I love beer conversations. No need to break the ice since the ice is already broken once that first ice cold drink lands on the table. No need to seek topics of conversation because they miraculously pop up with every sip. Strangers are almost instantaneously bonded in a drunken camaraderie. God bless beer!

I’m not a drunk though; just an ardent proponent of the exchange of life improvement teachings amid merriment. Incidentally, this is the kind I have been having of late with strangers turned acquaintances turned friends. Imagine if one day we all woke up drunk, all across the world! Monday Moments Ep 5 – The rise of the Creatives

I would probably have to be drunk to tell you more about this, but over the course of my Short life, I have tried my hand at various creative exploits including poetry (at a very tender age), singing (to the chagrin of all my listeners), dancing (despite my lanky frame), acting (oh, the memories) and a few other embarrassing ones. I never quite made it in any of these avenues, but I have been fortunate enough to meet many amazing Creatives, my latest encounter being with one Wamathai.

You see, I gave up my dream of being artistic when I realized that I would soon have to relocate to a shack somewhere in the sprawling slums of Nairobi if I kept on along that path. The pay just wasn’t good. So I moved into IT. Somehow, years later, my career path has led me back into crossing that of Creatives. You can imagine my joy.

Interesting doesn’t begin to express the week I had. From having to come up with a dazzling digital marketing proposal for a billion shilling company, to having to finish off a trendy website within hours, to realizing that there could finally be a business title for the things I do (my business card still reads internet consultant for lack of a better title), it was a week to cherish.

Starbucks now having it’s Ha! Moment

A few weeks back I read a disturbing article on how Starbucks had failed to replicate their success on Social Media in actual sales. As one of the few self proclaimed Social Media experts in Kenya, I had quoted Starbucks in many an instance as an epitome of Getting-it-Right on Social Media. Let’s face it, 13 million Facebook Fans in a span of two years is no mean feat, even for a behemoth such as Starbucks. If you don’t believe me, ask Coca-Cola, their closest competition on Facebook who have only managed to gunner 12 million Fans despite their global presence; or if you prefer local content, why not ask Safaricom how their Facebook page is doing?

UNDERSTANDING THE KENYAN INTERNET MARKET

Kenyans are weird! No, that’s probably too derogatory. Let’s just say that Kenyans are different. Think of the usual stereotypes of grumbling about a politician then voting him back in come election time, or flocking an overturned petrol truck knowing full well the potential repercussions. Forget even our obsession with everything Chinese, except Chinese food of course which is ironically quite expensive.

I like to think that the above description is totally skewed to a very sad wee section of the country.

A new crop of Kenyans, made up of college educated, urban living, middle to high income earning individuals is slowly emerging as the market to watch in Kenya. These individuals have independent and aspirational mindsets, are more informed on their choices, and definitely know a raw deal when they see one. The majority of these individuals falls within the 23 – 44 years old demographic, and guess what, they form the greater bulk of the internet market. I’m talking over 70% of a market that takes up half the 6.8 million internet users in East Africa. For the purpose of this post, let’s call them the Alphas.
