SOCIAL NETWORKS: BEYOND THE NUMBERS

The Social world had the pleasure of celebrating Social Media thanks to the Mashable Social Media day yesterday. A new trend that is taking the personal and business internet world by storm, and with millions of potential customers just hanging around Social Networks, Social Media is now a force to reckon with.

An effective way to get the numbers

One of the key elements of Social Networks, which gives them a power like no other, is their unique ability to spread the word, a phenomenon called going Viral. Start a hot topic and see how fast it spreads across the world like bush fire, with little effort from the originator sometimes. Continue reading ‘SOCIAL NETWORKS: BEYOND THE NUMBERS’

MZOORI CAMPAIGN! IT’S AN INVITES ONLY PARTY!

Don’t we all hate to be left out? Even more than that, don’t we all like to be among the select few? I know I do.

Mzoori’s publicity stunt can only be described as genius! I fist heard about Mzoori towards the end of last year. A visit to their website took me to an under construction page that was like no other under construction page (See my post on effective Under Construction pages). With no website to show, they already had a facebook page and a twitter profile. A visit to their facebook profile and I still didn’t know what these guys were upto. KENYAN START UP BANKING ON SOCIAL MEDIA, ONLY!

“Social Media is overrated!!”

That’s a statement I have heard once too often.

True success stories however beg to differ with the antagonists. One of these is the story of Fluid Tees.

When Ahmed came up with the idea of limited edition trendy T-Shirts that go with the season, all he had to back him up was an incredible sense of humor and a skilled designer by his side. How he was going to reach the millions of people both locally and abroad who recognize quality when they see one was a question he was yet to answer.

Living in a Social Media world, and having seen the viral nature of such phenomenon as Makmende, he decided to place his bets on Facebook and Twitter. Continue reading ‘KENYAN START UP BANKING ON SOCIAL MEDIA, ONLY!’

MOBILE ADVERTISING IN KENYA CHANGING GEAR

You might have heard of inMobi in South Africa or Admob (now owned by Google) in the US. These companies are now market leaders in Mobile Advertising across the globe, and are reaping billions from it.

What is Mobile Advertising? You might ask.

Mobile advertising is closely related to online or internet advertising, though its reach is far greater. Kenya currently enjoys a tremendous penetration rate in mobile phone usage, with a growth rate that surpasses some of the most developed countries in the world such as the United Kingdom. With over 18 million mobile subscribers, advertisers are looking at a rich, engaged audience that is easily accessible via this platform. Continue reading ‘MOBILE ADVERTISING IN KENYA CHANGING GEAR’

HOW TO BEAT FACEBOOK (PART 1)

Yes, finally someone has come up with a working formula!!

We marvel each passing day at how the likes of Facebook and Twitter are taking the world by storm, topping popular news channels and generating more online conversations about them than the user profiles they are supposed to be promoting, while earning their founders billions in the process from online advertisements.

The ever lingering question on most ambitious minds is this; ‘how can I create a comparable local success story?’ I believe it is possible, and I also believe that it will happen really soon. I however also bear strong feelings that most of our local pioneers are going about this the wrong way, and if we don’t watch out, the Forbes list might just take longer to come our way. Continue reading ‘HOW TO BEAT FACEBOOK (PART 1)’

GOOGLE, FACEBOOK…AND NOW TWITTER!!

I recently posted on Intervangelist about Ushahidi, the crowdsourcing website that grew from a simple Kenyan post-election-violence inspired project to an international success. Despite being a not-for-profit entity, it still gave us a very good lesson on Building first, then money later. Well, in comes Twitter. Continue reading ‘GOOGLE, FACEBOOK…AND NOW TWITTER!!’

3RD WORLD GUILTY OF JUST CONSUMING

East Africa’s enterprises and innovators had a unique opportunity on their doorsteps last week to learn new techniques in web content development at the East African Local Content Innovation Summit held in Nairobi over 7-8 August. The Summit was being hosted by Ignite Consulting and AITEC Africa in response to the urgent need that is to develop local content relevant to local interests and needs, especially with the region about to link to the world via undersea fibre cables that will deliver much faster and cheaper Internet connections.
