UNDERSTANDING THE KENYAN INTERNET MARKET

Kenyans are weird! No, that’s probably too derogatory. Let’s just say that Kenyans are different. Think of the usual stereotypes of grumbling about a politician then voting him back in come election time, or flocking an overturned petrol truck knowing full well the potential repercussions. Forget even our obsession with everything Chinese, except Chinese food of course which is ironically quite expensive.

I like to think that the above description is totally skewed to a very sad wee section of the country.

A new crop of Kenyans, made up of college educated, urban living, middle to high income earning individuals is slowly emerging as the market to watch in Kenya. These individuals have independent and aspirational mindsets, are more informed on their choices, and definitely know a raw deal when they see one. The majority of these individuals falls within the 23 – 44 years old demographic, and guess what, they form the greater bulk of the internet market. I’m talking over 70% of a market that takes up half the 6.8 million internet users in East Africa. For the purpose of this post, let’s call them the Alphas. SOCIAL NETWORKS: BEYOND THE NUMBERS

The Social world had the pleasure of celebrating Social Media thanks to the Mashable Social Media day yesterday. A new trend that is taking the personal and business internet world by storm, and with millions of potential customers just hanging around Social Networks, Social Media is now a force to reckon with.

An effective way to get the numbers

One of the key elements of Social Networks, which gives them a power like no other, is their unique ability to spread the word, a phenomenon called going Viral. Start a hot topic and see how fast it spreads across the world like bush fire, with little effort from the originator sometimes. Continue reading ‘SOCIAL NETWORKS: BEYOND THE NUMBERS’

91,000,000 MORE CUSTOMERS FOR YOUR BUSINESS

I went home on Friday a very happy man. Later that evening, amidst the banter and chatter of my drunken friends, I offered a toast to the East African Community. With disoriented looks on their faces, they lifted their glasses hesitantly and toasted back. Then one of them decided to order a bottle of water for me.

“I think he has had too much already” I had someone shout across the table.

He wasn’t totally wrong on that point. What they didn’t realize however was that mine was a valid toast to one of the best things that have happened to us in recent times. Continue reading ‘91,000,000 MORE CUSTOMERS FOR YOUR BUSINESS’

THE DARK SIDE OF SUCCESS

We spend our lives striving for the peak. We work hard each passing day hoping that today will be yet another step towards that the money, fame or fortune that success brings with it. Not all of us will achieve what we set out for, and in fact, few of us will. The greater percentage will have to settle for less, and live with the compromises that life brings with it. That is both good and bad. Can you imagine a world where everybody achieved their dreams? What sort of chaos would that be? Continue reading ‘THE DARK SIDE OF SUCCESS’

MZOORI CAMPAIGN! IT’S AN INVITES ONLY PARTY!

Don’t we all hate to be left out? Even more than that, don’t we all like to be among the select few? I know I do.

Mzoori’s publicity stunt can only be described as genius! I fist heard about Mzoori towards the end of last year. A visit to their website took me to an under construction page that was like no other under construction page (See my post on effective Under Construction pages). With no website to show, they already had a facebook page and a twitter profile. A visit to their facebook profile and I still didn’t know what these guys were upto. YOUR WEBSITE’S MONEY MAKER: THE LANDING PAGE

In recent times, I have spent the better part of my professional time helping budding interpreneurs to transform their business ideas into profitable internet businesses. Some are already on the road and thus my role is to help them steer the boat in the right direction (at least in my professional opinion), and some are still ideas in their originator’s minds.

The one question I always ask my wonderful clients is this; which is the money maker on this website?

The money maker is what techies like to call the Landing page. Continue reading ‘YOUR WEBSITE’S MONEY MAKER: THE LANDING PAGE’

GOOGLE, FACEBOOK…AND NOW TWITTER!!

I recently posted on Intervangelist about Ushahidi, the crowdsourcing website that grew from a simple Kenyan post-election-violence inspired project to an international success. Despite being a not-for-profit entity, it still gave us a very good lesson on Building first, then money later. Well, in comes Twitter. Continue reading ‘GOOGLE, FACEBOOK…AND NOW TWITTER!!’
